Frances Celeste Burroughs Family History
This site's families include Burroughs, Simcoe, Dillon, Greer, Longest, Dishman, Weedon and Monroe. These families lived in Richmond VA, New Kent VA, Westmoreland VA, Mathews VA and KY.
Frances Celeste Burroughs was born in 1892 in Richmond VA. She eloped at age 19 with Royal Aubrey Ledbetter. She was close to her four sisters throughout her life. When her father John Thomas Burroughs died in 1911 her older sister Ada took the lead in maintaining the remaining family. Ada had a business career and never married. Her home became the Burroughs home in Richmond.

Francis and Roy had their first child Aubrey when Francis was 20. When Francis was 25, they permanently moved to Norfolk VA. She was fully occupied having and caring for her five sons and one daughter. She struggled with diabetes in her later years leading to her death in 1968 at age of 76.

Francis's father was John Thomas Burroughs who was born 1854 in Richmond. His father was Thomas G. Burroughs born circa 1820 in Mathews VA and his mother was Frances Ann Dillon born 1838 in Richmond. Little is know of the earlier Burroughs. They certainly had challenging times living in Richmond during the Civil War. They were a very private family, not allowing photographs or burial markers. This makes it a challenge to reconstruct their genealogy.

Her mother was Carrie Adele Simcoe born in 1860 in New Kent VA. Carrie's father was George Washington Simcoe who was born in 1810 in KY. He was ordained a Deacon at the Methodist Conference in Kentucky in 1838. He married in Kentucky, then again in either KY or VA. He had three daughters from these marriages. In 1848 he married Parthenia Spilman in King George VA. Carrie was the sixth child of their marriage. George was ordained in 1852 in Methodist Episcopal Church, Fredericksburg, VA. He then served as a circuit Minister in the New Kent VA area.

Parthenia Spilman was born in circa 1820 in Westmoreland VA. Her ancestors were all from this area and included Greer, Dishman, Monroe and Weedon. Her great grandmother Ann Monroe born in 1746 was a distant cousin of US President James Monroe. The Monroe line is linked to Andrew Munroe who emigrated from Scotland to VA before 1650. The Weedon line is linked to George who emigrated from England to VA before 1680.
