Left is the photo of a young Royal Aubrey Ledbetter with his bride Francis Celeste Burroughs. Roy was born in 1888 at Amherst, VA, which was his mother's home. He grew up in Richmond VA. He and Francis eloped to Washington DC to in 1911. He took up his Father's carpenter trade. They started their family at 519 N. 22nd street in Richmond with the birth of Aubrey in 1912. They moved to 121 Walnut Street in Berkley VA (very near down town Norfolk) in circa 1918. They added Millard, Roger and Jane to their family before moving to 3314 Lyons Avenue in Norfolk. They completed their family with the birth of Dan and George; and raised their five boys and one girl at this home in the Lafayette Boulevard area of the then suburb of Norfolk. During this period Roy became a building contractor. Circa 1948 with the adulthood of their family, Roy and his son George built their retirement home on the water at 1793 Hancock Avenue in Norfolk. Circa 1953 Roy retired and he and Francis enjoyed the growth of their family with many grandchildren. The family was close and Roy and the sons had many heated discussions on most of the subjects of the day. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1961. Roy lost Francis in 1968. Life was not the same without his mate of 57 years. He died 8 months after Francis.

The Ledbetter pedigree is to Thomas Ledbetter who was born 1600 in Durham England and immigrated to Virginia circa 1630. He settled in Bristol Parish, Charles City County, Virginia on land near the south edge of the modern city of Petersburg where he died in 1655. Five generations of Ledbetter ancestors lived in the area, which later became Prince George County. During this period Bristol Parish constructed a brick church, which is now known as Old Blandford Church, an important historical landmark in Petersburg VA.

Late in the 1800s Herbert Ledbetter moved his family west. His son Coleman met and Married Tabitha Moss in 1805 in Prince Edward VA. Herbert eventually settled in Botetourt County VA just north of present day Roanoke. Coleman joined his father for at least the 1830 census before moving back to Prince Edward County where he settled in the Pamplin area. Coleman and Tabitha's son John W.A. Ledbetter married Margaret Elizabeth Davis of the Pamplin Davis family. See Family History in Pamplin VA for details of the Ledbetter and Davis families during this period.

Tabitha Moss was the daughter of James Moss who joined the Revolutionary Army at age 17. The Moss line includes William Henry Moss who was born between 1633 and 1635 at Lancashire, Lancaster, England. He and his wife Jane North are believed to have immigrated to Rappahannock, VA in c 1660. The line appears to link to Richard Moss born circa 1580 at Lancashire, Lancaster, England. Other families linked to the early Moss line include Hopkins (William immigrated from London England) and Montague (England). Montague is ultimately linked to King Edward I of England.
