family may have given them the home. He was Farmer circa 1856
at Appomattox, VA. He began military service on 5 Aug 1863
at Charlotte, VA, Enlisted as a Private in Company K, 18th
Infantry Regiment Virginia. Described as having a light complexion,
blue eyes with dark hair. He was 5 feet 9.9 inches tall. He
ended military service on 12 Aug 1864 at General Hospital,
Farmville, VA; Wounded on 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA
and left arm amputated. From his "FORM FOR RETIRING A
SOLDIER" he was retired from company K, 18th VA Regiment
as a Private, in the army of the Confederate States. He Applied
for and received $30 per year Solder Pension from VA. Served
in 18th VA Regiment, Hunters Brigade, Pickett's Division.
Justification: "On or about 16th May1864, wounded in
battle of Dreweys Bluff between Beauregard and Buttler Commands.
Was disabled by grape canister above the left risk, which
necessitated immediate amputation just below left elbow".
Age was given as 61 on 21 Mar 1888 at Lynchburg, Campbell,
VA.

new county line that would put the Pamplin area in the new
county. The new county which became Appomattox would have
a courthouse in Clover Hill (later Appomattox Court House)
which was 8 to 10 miles away versus 15 to 18 miles to the
Prince Edward Courthouse on 13 Mar 1839 at Prince Edward,
VA. He signed partition in favor of new county on 22 Apr 1841
at William Mattew's Store, Walker Church, Prince Edward, VA.

(Note: Attached to the Virginia Company in 1609. Arrived
in Virginia before 1620). He emigrated on 4 Dec 1619; He signed
an agreement on 4/9/1619 to settle an 8000 acre plantation
in Virginia to be known as Berkeley Hundred, and to act as
Captain and Governor, sailing with detailed instructions from
the London Company. He sailed from Kingrode, Bristol on Sept.
15, 1619 in the Margaret(47 tons) with 38 settlers, arriving
on December 4. Already in Virginia were his wife, two children,
and four indentured servants. On landing they held a Thansgiving
service according to instructions (and for perpetual celebration),
a service still held on the first Sunday of November (thanks
to the work of Pearl Woodlief Blackley). His commission as
Captain and Governor was revoked 28/8/1620 because of lack
of quick profits and he was relieved by George Thorpe. Thus
he was not present at Berkeley when the Indians attacked and
killed the settlers at Easter in 1622. He lived circa 1625
at Sion Hall on James River, VA; He secured a patent from
Sir George Yardley for 550 acres in the Great Weyanoke where
he established Sion Hill. His land bordered the James River
between Jordan's Journey on the east and included the present
Evergreen on the west.
