He lived before 1925 at 3314 Lyons, Norfolk, VA; This was the principle residence for his Family. His retirement years were at 1793 Hancock Avenue. He was Building Contractor circa 1940 at Norfolk, VA. He was retired circa 1953 at Norfolk, VA.

2. John Peter2 LEDBETTER (John, #4); born 17 Dec 1861 at Pamplin, Appomattox, VA; married Rosa Lee Phillips (see #3), daughter of Oscar Fitzallen Phillips and Nancy J. Burch, 9 Feb 1887 at Amherst, VA; died 29 Dec 1927 at Richmond, VA, at age 66; buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Richmond, VA.

He was Carpenter circa 1887. He lived circa 1900 at 1419 20th Street, Richmond, VA. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Richmond, VA; Ledbetter: John, Head, 57, Carpenter, House; Rosa, Wife, 50, House; Eric, Son, 18, Laborer, Tobacco Factory; Cecil E., Son, 17, Laborer, Machine Company.

John Wiley Alexander3 LEDBETTER (Coleman, #8); born 29 Mar 1827 at Appomattox, VA; married Margaret Elizabeth Davis (see #5), daughter of Peter Davis and Frances Hannah Ranson, 13 Nov 1856 at Hampden Sydney College, Prince Edward, VA; died 18 Oct 1896 at Roanoke, VA, at age 69; buried after 18 Oct 1896 at Fairview Cemetery, Roanoke, VA.

He lived circa 1856 at Pamplin, Appomattox, VA; Wife's Davis family may have given them the home. He was Farmer circa 1856 at Appomattox, VA. He began military service on 5 Aug 1863 at Charlotte, VA, Enlisted as a Private in Company K, 18th Infantry Regiment Virginia. Described as having a light complexion, blue eyes with dark hair. He was 5 feet 9.9 inches tall. He ended military service on 12 Aug 1864 at General Hospital, Farmville, VA; Wounded on 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA and left arm amputated. From his "FORM FOR RETIRING A SOLDIER" he was retired from company K, 18th VA Regiment as a Private, in the army of the Confederate States. He Applied for and received $30 per year Solder Pension from VA. Served in 18th VA Regiment, Hunters Brigade, Pickett's Division. Justification: "On or about 16th May1864, wounded in battle of Dreweys Bluff between Beauregard and Buttler Commands. Was disabled by grape canister above the left risk, which necessitated immediate amputation just below left elbow". Age was given as 61 on 21 Mar 1888 at Lynchburg, Campbell, VA.

(Note: Many of the decendents of her Father Peter Davis are buried behind the likely home she shared with JWA. They also donated the property for the Methodist Church accross the street from the home. This was previously the family stable. They left Pamplin after the Civil War). Purchased lot for burial of husband JWA. Owner M.F.Leadbetter Lot 2, Section 44 Div 7 circa 1896 at Fairview Cemetery, Roanoke, VA.

6. Oscar Fitzallen3 PHILLIPS; born 14 Dec 1832; married Nancy J. Burch (see #7), daughter of Stephen Burch, 25 Dec 1852; Rev J. E. Edwards.

8. Coleman4 LEDBETTER (Herbert, #13); born 1780 at VA; died circa 1870 at Pamplin, Appomattox, VA.

He and Doctor Davis signed partition supporting new county line that would put the Pamplin area in the new county. The new county which became Appomattox would have a courthouse in Clover Hill (later Appomattox Court House) which was 8 to 10 miles away versus 15 to 18 miles to the Prince Edward Courthouse on 13 Mar 1839 at Prince Edward, VA. He signed partition in favor of new county on 22 Apr 1841 at William Mattew's Store, Walker Church, Prince Edward, VA. He appeared on the census of 19 Sep 1850 at Appomattox, VA; Coleman Ledbetter, 70, M, Taylor, $300 Real Estate; J?.W., 26, M, Taylor; John W.A., 21, M, Farmer; Susan E., 16, F. All born in VA.

The nine known children of Coleman4 Ledbetter and Tabitha Moss (see #9) were as follows:

    (Note: An Elizabeth Ledbetter b. c1820 married Doctor Davis (Brother of Peter). Coleman's Census records shows a otherwise un-named daughter with a birth of c1820. Census and other evidence shows their families were co-located in Prince Edward in the c1832 to c1840 period).

    He was also known as William Temple LEDBETTER. He began military service on 15 Apr 1848 at Appomattox, VA, Elected 2nd Lt. Co 1, 1st Battalion 174th Regiment of VA Militia. He ended military service on 15 May 1852 at Appomattox, VA; Resigned position as 2nd Lt. He lived before 1854 at Adjacent Methodist Church, Pamplins Depot, Appomattox, VA; Large two story house covered with weather boarding and a tin roof. The walls are plastered and the floor is covered with wide pin boards. The original building was built before 1854 by Joseph W. Ledbetter a local tailor. Dr. Thomas Mathews purchase property and added several rooms. He appeared on the census of 1860 at Pamplin, Appomattox, VA; Joseph W. Ledbetter, 36, M, Taylor, $96 Real Estate, $100 Personal, VA; ? A. Ledbetter, 26, F Wife; Henry? C. Ledbetter, 2, M, VA.

He appeared on the census of 1820 at Botetourt, VA; Males: To 10 = 1, To 16 = 1, Over 45 = 2. Females: 10 to 16 = 1, 26 to 45 = 1. Agriculture = 1. (Note: The link between Herbert and his son Coleman is based on the source birth data of c1780 which matches Coleman. In addition Coleman appeared in the Botetourt Federal census of 1820 very near Herbert's entry. Further, the only the Coleman and Herbert Ledbetter census records in VA are the records shown).

He began military service on 5 Mar 1777 at VA Private 9th Regiment Virginia under Captain Woodson. 5 March 1777 name first appears on company payroll.

He was awarded Revolutionary war pension on 4 Mar 1831.

22. James6 MOSS (William MOSS, #33); born 15 Jul 1721; married Mrs. Mary Moss (see #23) circa 1750; died before 17 Mar 1785 at Powhatan, VA; Will recorded 17 March 1785.

He left a will on 13 Aug 1781 at Powhatan, VA; To wife Mary for life: 9 negroes, land I live on, 20 head cattle, stock, household goods, etc., to maintain and school my children; To dau. Mary Ann Negro girl and items; To dau. Nancy Negro girl and items; To dau. Tabitha Negro girl; To Granddau. Fanny Moss, when of age Negro Man; To sons James and Francis 400 acres in Buckingham Co, divided equally; one negro each; To sons Stephen and William, after wife's death the 400 acres I live on, equally divided. The nine Negroes I lent to my wife to be sold at her death and money divided 2 shares each to William and Stephen and 1 share to each of the other children. Executor: friend John Moss.

Tabitha cattle, sheep and hogs; To My granddaughter Frances Moss, feather bed etc. Ececutors: neighbors Nicholas Spears and John Stratton.

24. William6 DAVIS (Jeffrey, #35); born 1720 at VA; married Frances Temple (see #25), daughter of Robert Temple, 1740 at Charlotte, VA; died 1769 at Charlotte, VA.

He emigrated on 4 Dec 1619; He signed an agreement on 4/9/1619 to settle an 8000 acre plantation in Virginia to be known as Berkeley Hundred, and to act as Captain and Governor, sailing with detailed instructions from the London Company. He sailed from Kingrode, Bristol on Sept. 15, 1619 in the Margaret(47 tons) with 38 settlers, arriving on December 4. Already in Virginia were his wife, two children, and four indentured servants. On landing they held a Thansgiving service according to instructions (and for perpetual celebration), a service still held on the first Sunday of November (thanks to the work of Pearl Woodlief Blackley). His commission as Captain and Governor was revoked 28/8/1620 because of lack of quick profits and he was relieved by George Thorpe. Thus he was not present at Berkeley when the Indians attacked and killed the settlers at Easter in 1622. He lived circa 1625 at Sion Hall on James River, VA; He secured a patent from Sir George Yardley for 550 acres in the Great Weyanoke where he established Sion Hill. His land bordered the James River between Jordan's Journey on the east and included the present Evergreen on the west.
