Burgess Family Pictures

This is believed to be a 1860s photo of John Henry Burgess in his Confederate officer's dress uniform. Was supposedly a captain and with Lee at Appomattox when the war ended. Lost first two wives. Fathered 12 children. Owned plantation on Smith River in Henry, VA. Family tradition is that at the end of war he provided all of his freed slaves with an acre of land. Founded and preached at Primitive Baptist Church in Ridgeway, VA. When he died in 1914 at age 82, his obituary stated "His long and useful life was lived simply and unostentatiously, but the strength of his convictions and earnestness of purpose made its impress upon all who came within the circle of his acquaintance."
This is a circa 1890 photo of the John Henry and Mary Foster Burgess family. A note accompanying the photo identified the individuals as follows: starting at top left row is Robert, Jane, John Henry, Elisabeth (above), Mary Foster, Charlotte (Lottie), and Foster; the bottom row left is John Abe, Ellen, Pete, Posye, Joe and Lizzie Burgess Stultz (Daughter of Ruth Fields who was John Henry's 2nd wife and stepdaughter also raised by Mary Foster). Their apparent ages seem to correlate to there know birth dates. Pete's dress seems inappropriate for his age (about 5) but his haircut is a boy's.
The family of John Henry Burgess This is a 1907 photograph of John Henry Burgess, his wife Mary Foster Burgess and their children, children's spouses and grandchildren. The couple in the back row second from left is John Abe Burgess and his wife Florence Bradshaw parents of John Bradshaw Burgess (Jack).
This is a 1913 photograph of four Johns. From left to right John Abe Burgess, Uncle John Burgess, John Henry Burgess and John Bradshaw Burgess (Jack). This was taken at the Old Home Place in Ridgeway, Virginia, near Burgess Creek. Note that Uncle John was a slave that remained to live and work at the Old Home Place. Family tradition said that he accompanied John Henry during his military service. Family members visited him in later years when they returned to visit the Old Home Place. Four John Burgesses
