Burgess Homes in Chesterfield Co., VA
(1919 to 1944)
 
John Abe and Florence Bradshaw Burgess moved their family to a farm on Swift Creek in Chesterfield County VA in 1919. According to their daughter Charlotte the farm had 100 acres under cultivation and 100 acres in woods. The location of the farm was at North 37 degrees 17.2’ and West 77 degrees 27.0’,shown on the map at right.
The farmhouse burned down in the c1930. The current house on the site is shown in the following photograph.

Current House Farm Site
The family purchased a store and wood/coal business in 1928. It was located in Ettrick VA just across the river from Petersburg. The store contained a residence where the family moved. A major reason for this move was to locate the girls near Petersburg High School. It was located on 4 lots across from an elementary school at North 37 degrees 14.3’ and West 77 degrees 25.5’. The location is as shown on the map at right.
