John
Green Gay was born 1/25/1889 in Seaboard, NC. He helped
his father farm, married Lottie Parker (1911) and started
a family in Seaboard. He then moved to Chester in Chesterfield,
VA in 1919 where he purchased and farmed the Yellow House
Farm. In later years he was Superintendent of Sunset Park
Cemetery, which was built on his farmland. He died in Richmond,
VA on the 9th of May 1973.
As a young man his father Green Frederick Gay went west to
find gold. This was in circa 1870 when trains were the available
transportation. On his way to Chicago, he met two Mattson
brothers from a northern state. They traveled together and
staked a gold claim in the area of Deadwood, South Dakota.
His daughter Laura said that he also went to Colorado and
Wyoming. In 1878 is little sister May
sent him a letter pleading that he return home. Later
that year he became ill and sold his interest in a Goldmine
and returned to NC in fall of 1878 to farm and to father a
large family. He was much admired by his many children and
Grandchildren. Grandson
Bruce Jones documented his memories of his Grandfather.
Green Frederick Gay and four previous generations lived and
farmed in Northampton, NC. Jonathan Gay (b1745) settled in
North Carolina after he served in the Revolutionary war and
was given 234 acres for his service. Jonathan was likely born
in Isle of Wight, VA to a Quaker family. His likely father
was Thomas Gay (b1700). It is believed that Thomas Gay's grandfather
Henry Gay was brought to Nansemond, VA in 1663. Henry Gay
was born in England. Green Frederick Gay's great grandmother
was Mary Parker who descends from Richard Parker who was born
in Cornwall, England and immigrated to Nansemond, VA before
1650. The Parker line, beginning with Isaac Parker a descendent
of Richard Parker, are described in the Parker Family pages.
John Green's Mother was Anna White and Grandmothers were a
Stancell and a Buxton. Other ancestral families include Boon,
Page, Daughtery, Peebles, Allmand, Hudson, Chambers, Ruffin
and Perry. The Peebles are traced to David Peebles born around
1610 in Fife Scotland. The Pages are linked to Col. Thomas
Page (c1604) from England. The Ruffins are traced to William
Ruffin (1617) from England.
