Lord Patrick Ruthven. (Note: Believed
to have lived in British Isles). He was born in 1524.
Col. Thomas PAGE was born circa 1604 at St. Andrews, Plymouth,
Devon, England. He died on 10 Mar 1676 at Rappahannock, VA.
(Note: English Colonial Immigrant).
David PEEBLES was born circa 1610 at Fife, Scotland. He emigrated
on 5 Aug 1650 to Charles City, VA. He died in 1659 at VA.
Peter Ridley was born circa 1615 at VA. In 1644 at James City,
VA, Peter Ridley was Burgess in House of Burgesses for 4 years.
William Ruthvin was born in 1617 at Beyond The Sea. (Note:
At age 18, embarked for VA at Gravesend, England, July 24,
1635, on the ship "Assurance". Was the progenitor
of the Ruffins of VA and NC). He died in 1674 at Isle of Wight,
VA.
Edmond Prime. (Note: English Colonial Immigrant). He was born
in 1619 at St. Andrews, Plymouth, Devon, England. He lived
on 4 Jul 1635 at Gravesend, England, . Embarked on the ship
"Transport" of London, master Edward Walker. He
died after 1655.
Mrs. Jewry Ruffin. (Note: Early American Colonist). She was
born in 1621 at Isle of Wight, VA.
Abraham HAMLIN was born circa 1630 at Lancaster, VA. (Note:
Early colonial birth).
Mrs. Edmond Prime. (Note: Brodie listed Mrs. Edmond Prime
as possible dau. of Peter Ridleyof James City County who was
granted land in Martins Hundred in 1639 and served as Burgess
from James City County 1644?48). She was born circa 1630 at
James City, VA.
William PEEBLES was born on 7 Jul 1635 at Kilconquhar, Carnbee,
Fife, Scotland. He lived circa 1670 at Bon Accord Plantation,
Charles City, VA, . This included Bon Accord plantation locally
called "Bonniecord" which had for 300 years has
been claimed as the original sect of the Poythress family.
It is believed that Bon Accord passed to the Poythress family
through John Poythress's marriage to Christian Peebles. He
emigrated circa 1670 to Bon Accord Plantation, Charles City,
VA. He died on 5 Aug 1695 at Wynoke Parish, Charles City,
VA, at age 60. (Note: Scottish Colonial Immigrant).
Judeth Peebles. (Note: Early American Colonist). She was born
circa 1639 at Charles City, VA. She died in 1670.
Alice HEARN. (Note: Early American Colonist). She was born
circa 1642 at Isle of Wight, VA.
Robert Ruffin. (Note: Early American Colonist). He was born
in 1646 at Isle of Wight, VA. On 1 May 1684 at Surry, VA,
Robert Ruffin was Mr. Robert Ruffin by order of the Governor
was sworn in as Sheriff of Surry County. He was a Justice
of the Peace from 1680 on. In 1687 the Surry County Justices
of the Peace were Mr. Robert Ruffin, Major Samuel Swann, Mr.
Francis Mason, and Mr. Robert Randall. He died in 1693 at
Surry, VA.
James Allmand was born circa 1680. He lived circa 1750 at
The Rocks Plantation on James, Isle of Wight, VA, . In February,
1622, Edward Bennett undertook a new plantation with one hundred
twenty settlers who arrived on his ship, "The Seaflower,"
at Warriscoyak on the south side of the James River. Other
names have also been given to the Bennett plantations-- Wayanascoyak,
Warwick Squeake, Bennett's Welcome, Bennett's Plantation,
and perhaps an apt description, "The Rocks." Will
of "Robert Pitt, (1) merchant": Dated 6 June,
1672; proved June 9, 1674. ..; to son George Hill "after
my wife's decease, or sooner, if she please," all the
plantation, &c., contained in a patent of 750 acres granted
to me and my loving wife in the upper parish of Isle of Wight,
being at a place commonly called the Rocks, and running for
breadth down towards Pagan creek.
He died circa 1757 at Isle of Wight, VA.
James Buxton was born circa 1735 at Nansemond, VA. On 20 May
1753 at Suffolk Parish, Nansemond, VA, James Buxton was Clerk
of Vestry off and on from 20 May 1753 to 26 June 1759. He
was in military service in Revolutionary war: Ensign 4th Virginia,
28th September 1776; 2d Lieutenant, February, 1777. He Left
Army 1 Dec 1777 due to having finger shot off in a battle
in the North at VA. In proof of service he was a lieutenant
in the County Militia and fought in the Revolution. According
to the sworn testimony of Henry Skinner, James Wright and
Henry Harrison, all of Nancemond County in the State of Virginia
in 1833, James Buxton was a Leiutenant in the Virginia Continental
Line in the War of the Revolution. He entered the army in
1777 or 1778 and remained therein three or four years. He
returned home due to having a finger shot off in a battle
in the North. He died in 1818 at Nansemond, VA.
Jonathan Gay was born circa 1745 at Isle of Wight, VA. He
began military service after 20 Feb 1773 at Henshaw, Southampton,
VA, No longer a Quaker. In Quaker Black Water Monthly Meeting
2-20-1773 Jonathan dis "sundry disorders"; Co-Lieutenant
notified that he is no longer a Quaker and therefore not excused
from Military service. Served 3 years as a Revolutionary War
private and was given 234 acres in compensation. He died in
1822 at Northampton, NC. (Note: Was the first Gay ancestor
to settle in Northampton NC).
William D. White was born circa 1794. Circa 1820 William D.
White was Sea Captain. He died in 1834 at Norfolk, VA. (Note:
Tradition tells us William D. White was a sea captain from
Scotland. From the large inventory of his estate after his
death, it would appear that he probably had a store, but there
is no reference to that).
Green Stancell. (Note: Was father of a very large familiy
and accumulated a large property holding. In 1850 census he
had close to 1500 acres and 32 slaves). He was born on 29
Sep 1805 at Northampton, NC. He died on 28 Jun 1862 at Northampton,
NC, at age 56.
Derusha Peebles was born on 29 Feb 1808 at Northampton, NC.
(Note: Mother of 15 chidren in 25 years. Two died in infancy.
First (Mary Jane) born in 1826 when mother was 18. Last born
1851 when mother was 43). She died on 8 Oct 1856 at Northampton,
NC, at age 48.
Jeremiah Carter Gay was born on 10 Dec 1828 at Jackson, Northampton,
NC. He lived in 1850 at Jeremiah Gay Home (N36 21.864 W77
25.103), Northampton, NC. He began military service circa
1861 at NC Joined as a Sergeant in Company C, 12 th Cavalry
Battalion, 59th NC Regiment of the Confederacy. From 1878
to 1881 at Northampton, NC, Jeremiah Carter Gay was County
Commissioner. He died on 12 Mar 1898 at Jackson, Northampton,
NC, at age 69.
Green Frederick Gay was born on 26 Nov 1851 at Jackson, Northampton,
NC. (Note: As a young man, he went west via Chicago by train
during the gold rush. On his way, he met two brothers, whose
name was Mattson, from a northern state. They traveled together
and staked a goldmine together in the area of Deadwood, South
Dakota. His daughter Laura said that he also went to Colorado
and Wyoming. After prospecting for 7 years, he sold his interest
in a Goldmine near Deadwood South Dakota and returned to NC
in fall of 1978 to farm and to father a large family). He
and Anna Frances White lived in 1882 at Green F Gay Farm (N36
26.746 W77 27.191), Pleasant Grove, Northampton, NC. He died
on 2 Dec 1917 at Jackson, Northampton, NC, at age 66.
John Green Gay was born on 25 Jan 1889 at Seaboard, Northampton,
NC. He lived on 20 Dec 1919 at Yellow House Farm, Chester,
Chesterfield, VA, . John Green Gay acquired the Yellow House
farm with approximately 200 acres in 1919. John, Lottie and
their three daughters moved to VA during Christmas week of
1919. This was a significant move away from Northampton NC
where many generations of their families had lived. After
1929 John Green Gay was Cemetery Manager. During the 20s after
acquiring Yellow House Farm John used a verity of means to
support his family. He farmed, cut and sold pulp mill, ran
a dairy, and night managed a motel. In circa 1928 he sold
property to Sunset Park Cemetery and became its Superintendent.
He sold grave lots; managed the gravediggers; maintained the
grounds; and sold funeral vaults, monuments and markers. This
was his occupation until he retired when in his 70s. He died
on 9 May 1973 at Richmond, VA, at age 84. (Note: In 1930 Lottie
died of TB and left John with five daughters age 8 to 16.
His oldest daughter Marion also contracted TB and had to leave
to reside in a sanitarium. John and the daughters, with help
from Lottie and John's families, were able to keep the family
together producing five upstanding and successful daughters.
This all resulted in a very close family who's closeness has
been sustained to the present. It also made Yellow House Farm
an important icon for the family).
