John Green Gay acquired the Yellow House farm with approximately 200 acres in 1919. John, Lottie and their three daughters moved to VA during Christmas week of 1919.  This was a significant move away from Northampton NC where many generations of their families had lived.  He appeared on the census of 1920 at Bermuda Districk, Chesterfield, VA, Record: John G. He sold grave lots; managed the gravediggers; maintained the grounds; and sold funeral vaults, monuments and markers. This was his occupation until he retired when in his 70s.  He appeared on the census of 1 Apr 1930 at Hundred Road, Bermuda District, Chesterfield, VA, Record: Gay, John G.; Head, Rented, $20 per month, Does not live on a farm, Male, White, 41, Widowed, Literate, Born in NC, Parents born in NC, Speaks English, Superintendent, Cemetery, Class of worker: 7790, Speaks English; Marion, Dau., Female, White, 16, Single, Student, Literate, Born in NC, Parents born NC, English; Margaret, Dau., Female, White, 14, Single, Student, Literate, Born in NC, English; Elizabeth, Dau., Female, White, 12, Single, Student, Literate, Born in NC, English; Sarah Foy, Dau., Female, White, 9, Single, Student, Literate, Born in VA, English; Pauline, Dau., Female , White, 7, Single, Student, Literate, Born in VA, Parents born NC, English; Parker, Nathan; Father In-law, 62, Widowed Literate, Born in Indiana, Parents born NC, English, Carpenter, Residence, Occupation code: 06x1, English, No military service.  He was responsible for adding  electrical wiring.  Previously the house had indoor plumbing with a single bathroom and a water tank in the upstairs south bedroom.  Water was either hand pumped or pumped from an auto rear tire belt occurred 1931 at Yellow House Farm, Chester, Chesterfield, VA.  (Note: In 1930 Lottie died of TB and left John with five daughters age 8 to 16.  His oldest daughter Marion also contracted TB and had to leave to reside in a sanitarium. John and the daughters, with help from Lottie and John's families, were able to keep the family together producing five upstanding and successful daughters.  This all resulted in a very close family who's closeness has been sustained to the present.  It also made Yellow House Farm an important icon for the family).
